It’s hard to remember a time when “having a chat” didn’t mean typing into a box on a screen. Between WhatsApp groups, emails, Instagram messages and whatever new platform turns up next, most of us spend far more time tapping than talking. Convenient, yes. Efficient, definitely. But somewhere along the way, the humble telephone call has slipped down the pecking order. And that’s a bit of a shame.
Why a call feels different
A call carries something that words on a screen simply can’t. Tone of voice, pauses, the quick laugh before someone finishes their sentence — these little cues make up the richness of human communication. A sarcastic remark that comes across as witty in conversation can look blunt or even rude when it’s flattened into text. Emojis try to patch over that gap, but a winking face isn’t quite the same as the warmth in someone’s voice.
Hearing What’s Really Meant
There’s also something immediate, even reassuring, about a phone call. You can sense if a friend is tired, if a colleague is under pressure, if a relative is truly alright when they say “I’m fine”. Those nuances often vanish behind written words. In Britain especially, where understatement is an art form and “not bad” might mean “excellent”, you need the voice to catch the real meaning.
Generational Gaps
Different generations treat the phone in very different ways. For those who grew up when the landline in the hallway was the household lifeline, calling is second nature — it’s how things get sorted. For younger people, though, a phone call can feel oddly formal, even intrusive. Why ring when you can just send a quick message? The result is a gap: parents or grandparents might be itching for a proper conversation, while teenagers are content with a string of texts. Neither is wrong, but it does mean we can miss each other.
When Messages Work Best
Of course, there are times when a message is perfect. Checking a meeting time, sharing a photo, sending a link — all best done with a couple of taps. But when it comes to connection, real understanding, or even sorting out a misunderstanding, nothing quite replaces the sound of another human voice in your ear.
Making Calls Easy Again
The good news is that all our business mobile phone contracts include unlimited minutes and texts in the UK, and some include calls to EU countries, America, Australia and other English speaking countries free of charge. So why not make that call?
