As Samsung’s flagship models, you can be sure they incorporate all the latest features which many business mobile users require. Are these the phones for you?
The thing you first notice is the screen dimensions – which, whilst larger than the S7 and S8, scarcely make the handsets any larger than their predecessors. Samsung call these ‘infinity screens’ – they take up virtually the entire front of the phone, with no home button, which is now a ‘virtual’ button under the touch screen. Fingerprint recognition is moved to a sensor on the rear (and there is also the option of iris recognition.
As a result, the S8 boasts a 5.8-inch Quad HD+ screen, while the S8 Plus’s Quad HD+ display measures 6.2-inches. But the S8 dimensions (148.9x 68.1 x 8.0 mm) are scarcely larger than last year’s S7 (142.4 x 69.6 x 7.9 mm). Clever!
The camera has been upgraded – still 12 megapixels, but with a larger F1.7 aperture which will mean much better photos in low light conditions. It’s also got a new image stabilisation system to reduce blurring.
The traditionalists amongst us will like the fact that Samsung haven’t (unlike Apple) ditched the 3.5mm headphone jack.
There is only one storage option – 64GB – but Samsung have continued to offer a a micro SD expansion slot (up to 256GB) which should mean only the heaviest of videographers or DJs will run out of storage space.
Making its debut with the S8 is Bixby, Samsung’s new Siri-style personal assistant. Only time will tell if Bixby is a help or a hindrance, but Samsung claim that Bixby is more ‘context aware’ than its competitors, so is aware of what is on your screen and where you are, making it better able to respond to your commands. They also claim that Bixby is more able to understand real human speech, removing the requirement to make commands with specific words only.
