Google Lens: Your smartphone’s best kept secret

Did you know? Google has a game-changing feature which uses your smartphone’s camera and serves up useful information using a clever image and character recognition technology.

Identify over a billion objects instantly.

Open (or download, if you’re an iPhone user) the Google App and tap on the camera icon, this will open the Google Lens feature. From there you can identify animals, plants, wildlife, buildings, and books and just about anything in retail too.

Seen a funny looking plant and have no idea what it is?  Use Google Lens to take a photo and it will identify it, and probably tell you where you can buy one.

Like that mug you just used at the local café? Google Lens will search the web and show where you can purchase the same or a similar item.

Two ways to use this feature:

  1. Use the Google Lens camera to take a photo of the object in question.
  2. Select an existing photo in your camera roll and identify objects within it using Google Lens.

There are many other useful features within Google Lens, including copy and pasting text from photos, picking the best dishes from a menu, and translating text.

Most Android devices have the software pre-installed and can be accessed through the Google app, Google photos or Google Camera.  iPhone users need to download the Google App and grant permission to access their cameras.
