Vodafone and Three UK recently joined forces, creating VodafoneThree. We’ve previously commented on how experience in other countries suggests that reducing the number of networks results in an increase in cost to consumers. But there are some clear benefits as well, and as Three is publicising the merger in the UK press at the moment, we thought we’d summarise some of the key benefits.
What’s in it for Vodafone and Three users?
- Access to Both Networks Automatically
Your phone will lock onto whichever mast—Vodafone or Three—offers the best signal, without you lifting a finger. - No Changed Settings Required
You don’t need to tweak any settings. Smart behind-the-scenes systems detect your SIM and connect you to the best network available. - Boosted Speeds and Fewer Not-Spots
Thanks to joined-up spectrum across shared masts, millions – especially Three users – are reporting ~20% faster 4G, with some areas seeing up to 40%. Plus, it’s claimed that an estimated 16,500 sq km of the UK (imagine 10 Londons) will see better 4G coverage. - Rolling Out Quickly
Over 600 shared sites are already live, with plans for 9,000 more this year—and pretty much all areas covered within six years. - Ready for 5G Faster
Not only does this expand 4G, but it also accelerates 5G rollout. By the end of the first year, around 71% of the UK population—or roughly 50 million people—will have access to VodafoneThree’s fastest 5G speeds.
